What is ISO 21815?

ISO 21815 is a multi-part international standard, developed jointly by ISO technical committees, covering collision warning and avoidance for earth-moving machinery, mobile underground mining machinery, and road construction machinery. It sets out general requirements for detecting objects, warning the operator, applying automatic intervention control, and the test procedures used to verify that a system performs as claimed.

The standard is technology-neutral — it specifies what a system must achieve, not which sensor technology to use. It’s organised into parts:

  • ISO 21815-1 — general requirements and terminology (the foundational framework)
  • ISO/TS 21815-2 — the on-board J1939 communication interface between a safety device and the machine
  • ISO 21815-3 — risk area and risk level for forward/reverse motion
  • ISO 21815-4 — risk area and risk level for swing/rotation motion


Certification against ISO 21815 tells a mine that a system has been designed and tested to a recognised, internationally consistent benchmark rather than to a single supplier’s private specification.

For mines working toward Level 9 compliance under the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), ISO 21815 is the required communication standard.
